Course of studies

The stay abroad at one of our partner universities usually comprises two semesters. During this time, legal competencies can be acquired by comparing legal systems as well as personal competencies by dealing with intercultural experiences. Within this framework, four courses on the law of the country visited (preferably dogmatic core subjects such as contract law) must be successfully completed at the partner university abroad.

As a rule, the preparation of the certificate thesis (CLE) is started after the return to Hanover. However, before starting the preparation of the thesis, the relevant evidence must be submitted to the Erasmus Office of the Faculty of Law of Leibniz Universität Hannover.

The standard period of study until completion of the certificate examination regularly comprises 1 ½ years. On application, this period can be disregarded when calculating the standard period of study for the so-called free attempt within the framework of the compulsory subject examination in Lower Saxony.

Exams and graduation

In order to obtain the "Certifikatum Legum Europae (CLE)", the achievements listed below have to be fulfilled. Corresponding certificates of achievement are to be submitted to the Erasmus Office of the Faculty of Law.

  • successful participation in four courses on the law of the country visited
  • successful participation in a course on European law
  • successful participation in the ELPIS colloquium and a corresponding tutorial
  • successful participation in a seminar on the field of law from which the topic of the certificate thesis originates

In the third semester of the certificate program, the student must then complete the certificate thesis, which is defended before a three-member examination committee (approx. 45 minutes).

Under the following conditions, the certificate thesis completed in ELPIS I may also be recognized as a capstone thesis:

  • Application for admission to the focus area examination is made after full completion of the ELPIS I supplemental course of study (CLE),
  • the certificate work was done abroad at one of our partner universities,
  • the preparation of the certificate thesis was under the supervision of a professor at the partner university abroad and
  • the topic of the certificate thesis has been approved by the Dean's Office of the LUH Faculty of Law as a student thesis topic.

In this case, the Dean of Students Office will advise how the paper would be graded according to the focus area examination regulations here. This evaluation may differ from the evaluation made within the framework of the supplementary study program. The student in question therefore has the right to choose:
If the notified evaluation is accepted, the certificate thesis will at the same time become the course thesis with the notified grade. This covers only the written part of the specialization area examination; the oral part must still be completed.
If, on the other hand, the notified assessment is not accepted, the certificate thesis remains exclusively a component of the supplementary studies.
